![]() This means that, when the dub voice artists are trying to do their work, they have two big problems. Normally voice tracks are recorded first and then animation is made to fit that. In Japan, it is normal to animate first, and voice artists are professionals at matching voice to movement. What this means is that the script is devised to fit the mouth movements that were made for Japanese. The animation simply wasn't designed for other languages. A dub is professionally done and there are not multiple versions in existence like there can be with subs. Some people find it easier to connect with characters that are actually speaking their language, rather than a foreign one. It also happens in manga scanlation, when people's personal ego overrides their duty to the fanbase to actually translate rather than rewrite the text. Fansubbers usually keep those in, but some fansub groups add things that are not actually there in the original, such as swearwords and violent insults. This is less the case in professional subs, but they are often further from the exact meaning because of trying to translate cultural ideas for a different audience. Subbers sometimes rewrite the script to suit their egos. You have to read and watch and it might be distracting. This makes it much closer to the manga than the dubs. Thus the words you hear are almost entirely the same as the dialogue in the manga for the included scenes. The animation was created for the Japanese script. So whatever you choose, ultimately, choose one and stick with it. It isn't just about language, it's also about how the two things fit together. It is the quickest way to disjoint yourself from the series, if the way the characters speak and present themselves changes. Nothing worse than switching between voices and styles. There are a number of different things to take into consideration.īefore I begin, I'll be clear that I hate dubbing, but I will try and be objective xD.įirst and foremost, pick one and stick with it.
